Veronica Fraley Claims National Title In The Discus

Interview with Fraley after her New Balance National Championship in the Discus

Wakefield's Veronica Fraley claimed her first New Balance National Championship today with a throw of 169-4.

Fraley claimed the lead in the beginning of the competition and was able to hold on improving her winning distance on the final throw.  She had thrown 167-4 earlier in the competition, which would have been good enough to win.  Second place was set by South Carolina rival Tedreauna Britt who threw 164-10.  The two battled earlier this year at the Bojangles Track and Field Classic.

Fraley has competed in this event since her sophomore year taking 10th and 11th.  This had been a big goal of hers ever since first attending the meet, especially since it was in her home state of North Carolina.

Fraley holds a seasons best of 175-9.  She told us she would have loved to throw a new PR today, but the National Championship is the most important thing.  Fraley has held the North Carolina State Record since last summer when she threw 170-4 at the USATF JO National Championships.

Fraley is also a favorite in tomorrows Championship Shot Put.  She's coming off a PR in the event last weekend of 49-5.5 as she hopes to bring home her second national title of the weekend.

*Update

Fraley took 4th in the Shot Put on Sunday as she had a best throw of 48-10.75, just off her overall PR.  Fraley had her best mark on her 5th throw moving her up as she was just over a foot off winner Payden Montana.
