Arkansas-Pine Bluff Players Sweep SWAC Soccer Weekly Honors

SWAC Announces Weekly Soccer Honors

Bre-Ann Laypoole is Awarded Her Second 'SWAC Goalkeeper of the Week' Honor

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The conference announced today that Arkansas – Pine Bluff (UAPB) Lady Lion's junior forward Silvia Fuentes has been named this week's SWAC Player of the Week, along with two other teammates. Midfielder Rachel Harker has been recognized as the league's Defensive Player of the Week. Bre-Ann Laypoole was named the SWAC Goalkeeper of the week.

The Lady Lions (4-2) went an unblemished 2-0 last week and recorded first-time wins over Harding and Arkansas-Little Rock. The victories set a new school mark for UAPB as the Lions posted four wins out of conference play.

It is also a new mark for the records books for UAPB soccer to have swept the SWAC Weekly Honors.

“It does not surprise me much that these three players were recognized this week by the SWAC. These girls played very well and their hard work, determination, and perseverance have been rewarded. We will just keep doing what we are doing and prepare for conference play coming up in October,” said Mazza.

This was Fuentes' and Laypoole's second SWAC Weekly Honor of the season.

Fuentes (F, 5-5, Jr., Moreno Valley, Calif.) led the Arkansas-Pine Bluff offense with five shots, two goals and two assists for a total of six points. She scored two goals against Harding and posted two assists against Arkansas-Little Lock.

Harker (D, 5-6, Jr., Burnaby, Ontario) helped UAPB to a shutout in a 2-0-0 week. She anchored a defense that posted a 4-0 win against Harding on Sept. 7. Overall the Lady Lions have had three shutouts in six games this year.

Laypoole (GK, 5-9, Sr., Marion, Ind.) stopped eight shots in a win over Arkansas-Little Rock (UALR). She made a game-saving save with one minute left in regulation and helped Arkansas-Pine Bluff to its first-win ever over UALR.
