Running Around the Nation (1/11 - 1/13)

Arkansas Invitational (AR)

Friday Results:  College Division

Saturday Results:  High School Division | Live Flash Results | Performance List

The Arkansas Invitational has become one of those events during the indoor season that anyone who are fans of the sport need to check out the results.  Saturday's high school portion of the invitational did not disappoint this year, as numerous U.S. top five marks were put up.  The top performance in the day came from Wayne Davis (NC), who ran the 60m hurdles in an amazing 7.63 seconds.  Not only does Davis' time put him atop the U.S. rankings, but it also leaves him a mere .01 behind the national record in the event.  Coming in second was fellow North Carolina sprinter Booker Nunley in a great time of 7.78.

The sprints definitely dominated the weekend in Fayetteville.  Strong Texas and North Carolina contingents led the way.  Outside of Davis and Booker, fellow Tar Heel Fuqauwa Greene (NC) ran 21.76 in the 200m dash, which puts him at #1 in the country.  Another top ranking in the nation came from Akinto Boone (NY), who blazed to a mighty 48.34 in the 400m dash.

On the girl's side, Texas led the way.  Dunbar (TX) teammates Victoria Jordan and Ashley Collier finished 1-2 in the 60m dash with great times of 7.52 and 7.57.  Both athletes now rank 1-2 in the nation.  Precious Selmon (MO) won the 60m hurdles with a top ten mark nationally with a winning time of 8.93, beating her nearest competition by nearly a third of a second.  In the 400m dash Diamond Richardson (TX) beat Shakeia Pinnick (IL) in one of the most exciting races of the day, edging the Illinois star 56.32-56.35.

In the relays, Skyline (TX) put up the best relay performance of the day in the girl's 4x200m relay.  Skyline ran 1:40.20 to win their race.  Shade Weygandt (TX) continued her impressive ways in the girl's pole vault, winning her event in 13-06.

Dartmouth Relays (NH)

Dartmouth Relays Boys Results: Day 1 / Combined Results

Dartmouth Relays Girls Results: Day 1 / Combined Results

The distance medley relays and sprint medley relays kicked off the Dartmouth Relays Friday night, and they did not disappoint.  Two new US #1 marks were put up in the sprint medleys, as the La Salle (RI) girls squad and Merrimack (NH) boys squad won their respective races.  Merrimack beat Colonie (NY) for the boys title, while running 3:39.08, nearly three seconds ahead of the runner-up squad.  La Salle showed their strength, beating Colonie (NY) 4:12.01 to 4:20.59.

In the distance medleys, Shenendehowa (NY) won both events.  The Shen. girls won by 16 seconds in 12:26.65, while the Shen. boys won in 10:35.41, beating state rival Shaker by three seconds.  Both Shenendehowa times rank them in the top ten in the event.

Saturday rode off the results from Friday night quite easily.  A handful of great performances occurred, making Dartmouth one of the top places to be nationally this weekend.  The highlight of Saturday came in the girl's mile.  Greenwich's Caitlin Lane (NY) beat a stellar field with a time of 4:55.25.  Lane beat Jillian King by just over a second, as King finished in 4:56.30.  Jeanne Mack (RI) placed third in 4:56.57.  Five different girls broke five in the mile.

A few other key performances throughout Saturday came in the field events.  Becky O'Brien (ME), one of the top shot putters in the country, won her marquee event with a 46-00.75 throw.  O'Brien led four girls over the forty foot mark.  Steve Crouse (NY) meanwhile won the triple jump with another great leap this season.  He easily beat the field with his mark of 47-07.25.  David Slovenski (ME) also performed well, taking home the top spot in the pole vault with a result of 16-00.

LSU Invitational (LA)

LSU Invitational: Meet Results

While the Arkansas Invitational stole the show in the south this weekend, the LSU Invitational put together a fine meet as well.  As with the Arkansas Invitational, the LSU Invitational brought together many top ranked sprinters and pinned them head to head.

The star performer on the day came from Erica Alexander (TX) in the 400m dash and the 55m dash.  Alexander beat both fields, taking home victories in 57.81 seconds and 7.07 seconds.  One of the better performances as well came in the girl's pole vault where last year's Nike Indoor Nationals winner Rachel Laurent (LA) cleared a near identical mark that won her NIN's in '07.  Laurent easily beat the field with a clearance of 13-02.

One of the most anticipated events of the day was supposed to come in the 55m hurdles where Willie Wynne (GA), one of the top hurdlers in the nation, was opening up his big meet season.  Wynne ran 7.34 Friday evening to advance to the finals on Saturday, only to false start in the finals and was disqualified.  This was definitely a disappointing result to one of his first tests of the season.

While Wynne might have been knocked out of the big show, the San Antonio Blazers track club showed up in full force.  Rynell Parson (TX) and Joey Roberts (TX) won their respective events for the track club.  Parson won the 55m dash in 6.25, while Roberts won the 400m dash in 49.06.  Also, the squads 4x200m relay squad came up victorious in 1:28.38.

Molloy Stanner Games (NY)

Molloy Stanner Games Results: Boys / Girls

The highlight event of the meet was supposed to be the girl's elite mile, and the event certainly impressed.  Led by Foot Locker finalists Hannah Davidson (NY) and Shelby Greeny (NY), the race went out at a very quick pace, with four athletes pulling away on the final lap to make it a special race.  Hannah Davidson pulled away for good down the final stretch to win in 4:55.05, while Greeny placed second in 4:55.54.  Coming in third place was Maude Adams (NY) in 4:56.47, while Heather Stephens (CT) finished fourth in 4:56.74.

Other top girl's performances came in the 3000m and 1000m.  Davidson's Saratoga Springs (NY) teammate Cassie Goutos ran a strong race to win the 3000m run by one second over Garden City's (NY) Emily Mengs in 10:05.96 for what is currently a U.S. #1 mark.  Kristin Reese (NY) won the girl's 1000m run over a strong field with a U.S. top-five time of 2:53.50.

The girl's side seemed to capture the most attention this weekend in New York, but a few athletes from Connecticut made sure the boy's events at the Molloy Stanner Games received some attention.  Andrew Judd (CT) and Parker Doudreau (CT) won their respective events.  Judd beat a solid mile field with a time of 4:22.19 to win the close race by just over a second, while Doudreau won the 1000m race in a U.S. #1 mark of 2:28.93, nearly a four second win.

Montgomery Invitational (MD)

Montgomery Invitational Results: Boys / Girls

Article By Brandon Miles (MileStat.com)

With Millrose Mile invitations on the line and intense competition from some of Maryland and Pennsylvania's best milers, the state of Virginia had a dominant showing in the elite mile race at the Montgomery Invitational in Landover, Maryland on Saturday. Blacksburg senior Peter Dorrell (pictured left by John Herzog) led a top three sweep of Virginians in the boys' mile race with a 4:16.81 victory. Dorrell had been considered a pre-race favorite, so his win was not nearly as a surprise to have two other Virginians finish right behind him under 4:20 to best the remainder of the field in Oakton senior Joe Lorusso (2nd, 4:17.83) and Orange County senior Logan Collins (3rd, 4:18.55). All three individuals ran personal best times at Montgomery.  Click Here for Rest of Article
