Semana Seis Es Muy Caliente: Chile Pepper, Capital City, Parkway West, and Much More

9/30 Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival Fayetteville, AR

The Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival hosted by the University of Arkansas is one of the biggest and most competitive meets in the entire country. It also may just be the fastest. This meet features a number of Missouri teams and has for a long time. Last year, the top Missouri finisher on the girls side in "El Caliente" was Blue Springs South senior Victoria Findley, who just so happened to win in 17:33 and just so happens to be returning this year in hopes of repeating. Mikayla Reed from Washington ran 18:13 last year and is the second fastest returner. The top 2 returners from last year's meet should do battle again this year and Reed will be looking to even the score this season after losing to Findley at Forest Park. On the boys side, the finisher from Missouri last year's "El Caliente" was Stephen Kielhofner of Springfield Catholic, who finished just ahead of the great Austin Hindman. His 15:22 was his big breakthrough last year and he has yet to break 16:00 this season, but Saturday could be the day. He hasn't been getting nearly as much attention as Mugeche and Riddle and the West Plains boys as a result, but Saturday could be the day he throws his hat in the ring. Max McDaniel and Ryan Riddle were 10th and 11th last year and both will be in attendance again this season.

MO Teams From 2016: Blue Springs South, Bolivar, Buffalo, Cassville, Central (St. Joseph), DeSoto, East Newton, El Dorado Springs, Farmington, Festus, Hermitage, Hollister, Jackson, Joplin, KC East, Kearney, Kickapoo, Lafayette (Wildwood), Lamar, Liberal, Liberty North, Marshfield, McDonald County, Montrose, Neosho, Nevada, Nixa, Ozark, Parkview, Springfield Catholic, Stockton, Strafford, Summit Prep, Washington, Webb City, West Plains, Willard

9/30 Capital City Challenge Jefferson City, MO

Once they opened up Oak Hills to the public for a state preview meet, the floodgates opened as well. The Capital City Cross Country Challenge is now one of the premier meets in the state and attracts attention from all over. This year, the big story will be: Just how fast can Blue Springs senior Victor Mugeche traverse this course? After sub-15:30s at Forest Park and Rim Rock and a 15:11 at Greg Wilson, Mugeche appears to be the man to beat in the entire state, much less just in the race. He won't see too much competition here, but will be racing the clock. If he breaks under 15:30 in late September at the state course, we have to believe he'll be challenging the state course record in November. The Reis brothers from Lee's Summit North will probably be his biggest competition in the 3-4 race as well as Billy Driemeyer from Lindbergh and Charlie Teeter from Webster Groves. On the girls side, Lee's Summit West is looking to get in a good practice run on the state course before going after the title in November. McKenna Butler and Madison Hulsey are their top two at the moment. Helias Catholic's girls will be looking to make a statement as they will get to test themselves against the powerhouse that is LSW. The 1-2 races will see a lot of action, too, with Lamar bringing in their A boys squad. Mark Venable and Kolin Overstreet are 2 of the top 5 boys in the state in Class 2 at the moment and will battle it out. On the girls side, Fatima will be in attendance and should dominate the race. Brianna Haller and Kendall Haller will be leading the way, but watch out for Steelville's Allie Gibbs. This will be the first matchup between the two of them that we will see. So far, Gibbs is the fastest girls in Class 2, but Bri Haller is the returning state champ.

Confirmed Teams (9/26): Chadwick, The Summit Prep, Northeast (Cairo), Alton, Bowling Green, Barstow, California, Centralia, Diamond, Fatima, Hallsville, Highland, Holden, Lamar, Maplewood-Richmond Heights, Plato, Russellville, South Callaway, Sarcoxie, Steelville, Whitfield, Affton, Eldon, Helias Catholic, Lutheran South, Incarnate Word, MICDS, Moberly, Pacific, St. Charles West, Westminster Christian, St. Mary's (STL), Ft. Zumwalt South, Francis Howell, Lee's Summit North, Lee's Summit West, Northwest (Cedar Hill), Nixa, Parkway South, Platte County, Raytown, Webster Groves, Blue Springs, Chaminade, Ladue, Lindbergh, Park Hill South, Seckman, Troy-Buchanan

9/30 Parkway West Invitational Wildwood, MO

The Parkway West Invitational, since moving to the Living Word Church in Ellisville, has grown into an enormous meet - one of the biggest of the weekend. The Parkway West Invite features a number of St. Louis County and St. Charles County schools, but also Rock Bridge and O'Fallon (IL). Last year, the Parkway West girls came out on top and they should be the clear favorite to win again with very little competition up to their level this year. Chloe Hershenow will be the one to beat. Abigail Juedemann will be doing battle with her again in hopes of pulling off the upset this time after finishing behind her at Hancock. Parkway West's boys will also be the heavy favorites to win their race, but will receive a challenge from St. Louis University High, Rock Bridge, Lafayette, Kirkwood, and O'Fallon. There are a number of boys who could win this race, but we'll be keeping our eyes on Matyas Csiki-fejer, Blake Selm, Nassim Oufattole, Harrison Brown, Christian Baker, Paul Burka, and Lucas Capistrant

9/30 KC Metro Championships Peculiar, MO

A number of teams have yet to sign up for this meet, but we know it is about to be huge. Last year, 202 boys toed the line just in the Varsity boys race, including one team from California, but the top Missouri team on the boys side was Rockhurst who took 3rd. After duking it out with Blue Springs at Rim Rock, they won't see them again this week, but they should be the top boys team again in 2017 - probably the winners this year. Liberty will also be challenging. Tom Seitzer and Peter Campbell will be the big names to watch, but also Ryan Flood, Staley's Tyler Rodvelt, and Warrensburg's Edward Wilhite. The girls race will feature another battle between Raymore-Peculiar stars Miranda Dick and Makenzie Stucker vs Liberty's Madelynn Hill. Others to watch will be St. Michael the Archangel's Caroline Meyers and Staley sophomore Alexandra Hamre. Park Hill South is starting to come around led by Emma Roth and Liberty North will be one of the top teams to watch, led by Elizabeth Stinson

Confirmed Teams (9/26): Kearney, Liberty North, Notre Dame de Sion, Oak Park, Park Hill, Park Hill South, St. Michael the Archangel
