W2W4: What to Watch For At SPC State Meet

The SPC state track and field meet is this weekend in Dallas, Texas at St. Marks High School.

Only the best of the SPC athletes will be competing. If you think the SPC doesn't have the quality individual athletes and teams that will knock your socks off, then you're mistaking.

Here are just some of who you should watch for.

Sprints

Kinkaid senior Kennedy Gamble will be running for a state title in the 100m and 200m races....again. Gamble is the SPC 2017 champion in both events and has been running like a woman on fire all season long.

On the season, she is the TAPPS leader in both events as well as one of the top sprinters in the state. With 11.61 and 23.84 marks, she is in a good position to sit at the top of the awards stand again this year.

The boys sprints could be a two man battle. There are eight lanes on the track, but all of the attention could specifically be in two lanes. Between Genson Hooper Price of Houston St. Johns and Cameron Conyers of Austin St. Stephens one of them is ranked #1 and the other one is ranked #2 in each of the 100m, 200, and 400m events.

Price is the Mr. Do-It-All as he can produce points in a multitude of events. He won both the 100m and 400m last year along with the triple jump. Conyers is no one event wonder either. He won the 200m last year and was second in the 400m behind Price.

Distances

If you think the sprint events need some more players in the mix, wait until you hear about the distances. The distance events are both one sided.

The girls events are led by Hockaday's Adoette Vaughan. Vaughan leads the 800m, 1600, and the 3200m. The three time SPC cross country champion was second in the 800 last year after winning state as a freshman. She also won her second straight 1600m title in 2017.

We will soon find out how many titles Vaughan will shoot for this weekend.

On the boys side the situation is very similar to the girls side. This time it's Austin St. Stephens junior who leads the three distances. Carrozza is also the season leader in the 800m, 1600m, and the 3200m.

Hurdles

In the girls hurdles , Jamal January is yet another Stephen's athlete who leads his events. January is the 110h and 300H leader in the rankings. January has yet to win a TAPPS state title, be he very close and this could be his year. Don't be surprised if he captures two titles.
