UAPB Defends a PVAMU Set Piece

PINE BLUFF, AR – The Lady Lions make program history today with a win over the Lady Panthers of Prairie View A&M. Today's victory marks the first time the soccer program has won the SWAC Western Division title.

Junior forward Jade West opened the scoring at the 18th minute. Freshman defender Reaghan Zilkie and senior forward Daphnee Cadet were both credited with assists on West's goal.

The first half saw both teams fighting hard for control of the game. UAPB had seven shots to PVAMU's five in the first half and led 1-0 going into halftime.

Senior forward Daphnee Cadet would begin an awe-inspiring performance at the 59th minute. Junior midfielder's Rachel Harker and Silvia Fuentes put together a string of passes that found the feet of Cadet at the goal line. The Lady Panthers goalkeeper Melissa Aguayo challenged for the ball but Cadet's power through the ball was unstoppable and she got the ball past the goal line.

Just one minute later, at the 60th minute, Fuentes and junior forward Nicole Parks-Powell did a one-two pass along the sideline and Fuentes carried the ball up the line. After beating the Lady Panther defender, Fuentes crossed the ball into the box right to the foot of Cadet who first-timed the ball into the back of the net.

Cadet would score a hat-trick at the 69th minute off a cross from freshman midfielder Darienne Korbai. The Lady Lions would continue to dominate the second half by tallying eight shots to the Lady Panthers two. The game would end 4-0 for UAPB.

“I am very proud of the girls for winning the SWAC Western Division title because that was one of our team's goals this season. Prairie View came out to play today and gave us a good game. This puts our team in good standing for the SWAC tournament as we will face the fourth seed of the Eastern Division in our opening match of the tourney. Overall we played well today and I am happy for the girls,” said Coach Mazza.

The Lady Lions play Friday, October 15 at home versus the University of Tennessee – Martin at 1PM.
