Volleyball Earns 2nd Place Seed for Upcoming SWAC Tournament

Lady Lions Volleyball set to compete for SWAC Title
PINE BLUFF, Ark.--The Lady Lions volleyball team finished their regular season play on Friday November 12th with a disappointing loss to SWAC West #1 seed Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers.

“We just couldn't get anything going,” said UAPB head coach La'Kyva Walton. “Nevertheless we are not going to let that stop us from going to the SWAC Tournament and going for it all because it's anyone's game now. Losing one Senior (Jasmine Jacobs) at the end of this season will be hard but we are excited in the direction that the program is headed. With just three months of playing together this team has earned their spot in the conference tournament with a 5-3 record.”

Last season the Lady Lions finished 0-8 in conference play. They have respectively earned the 2nd place seed in the Western Division of the SWAC. The Lady Lions will play #3 seeded (East) Mississippi Valley State on Friday November 19th at 9:00a.m.

“The tournament is double elimination but we are trying not to focus on the elimination part”, says freshman Rachel Hornbuckle.

The Lady Lions will depart Thursday morning to go for the gold in Montgomery, Alabama. As though it may seem that the Lady Lions are the underdog they really are not in that position as they feature a plethora of talented players at all positions.

Britta Wilmers who has been selected as the SWAC Volleyball Player of the Week twice this season is in the running for Freshman of the Year and for the All-Conference team as an Outside Hitter. Junior, Lorin Johnson is in the running for Libero of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.

“No matter what happens, I am very pleased with the work and dedication these young ladies have demonstrated throughout the course of this season,” said Walton.” “I just want the girls to go and compete, put it all on the line, and have no fear and show no mercy.”
