Senior Spotlight: 3A - Zoe Williamson

Full Name: Zoe Williamson

High school: Harding Academy

When did you first start running, and do you recall any of your childhood races? I first started running the summer after 5th grade, but before that I had done several local 5k's with my dad and one of my friends, where we had competed for our age group titles. My first xc race was in 6th grade. I can vividly remember walking the course and seeing several signs posted for me by my family. Everyone was wondering who "Zoe" was, as my name was on the signs. I was very embarrassed and told my parents to not do that again. However, this act by them very accurately portrays my family's love for running.

Was there a certain moment when you realized you would be able to compete at a high level? After getting 3rd in the 3200 at the 3a State Meet my sophomore year.

What are some bumps in the road that you've encountered when it comes to training for different events during the season? Just before my sophomore track season, I struggled with an iron deficiency. My first meet that year I ran 15:11 for the 3200. I soon began taking iron supplements and ended up being the most improved member of my team, ending the season with a pr of 12:48 at the 3a State meet. Looking back on that, we can't help but praise God for the improvement He has gifted me with.

If you had to pick: Track and Field or Cross Country, and why? Cross Country, I love the team aspect and the longer distance.

How is the college recruiting process going, and what schools are you looking at? I am still considering my options and am open to go anywhere. I have been on an official visit to Harding and I loved team feel there.

Where are you going to college? If you have already committed, what made you choose them? I have not committed.

Is there another track event you wish you were good at? What is appealing about it? Pole vault looks like a lot of fun.

What are some hobbies and interests you have outside of running? I am really passionate about the Bible and Ministry and I enjoy hiking, traveling, writing, and public-speaking.

Who is your role model, and why? My parents are my role models and I in many ways aspire to be like them. My dad has been my running partner from day one and he continues to be. My mom is pursuing a PHD in theology and inspires me to pursue full-time ministry in the future. I much appreciate the hours upon hours of running talk that my parents endure from my sister and I during the season.

Everyone has a bucket list, so give us some of the things on your list! I hope to one day break 3 hrs in the marathon, compete at Nationals for Cross Country and Track, run 100 miles in a week, thru- hike the Pacific Crest Trail, and learn a new language.

What is the best advice you have received? "Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, 'You did not make me'? Can the pot say to the potter, 'You know nothing'?" Isaiah 29:16b

What is your favorite pre-race snack, tradition, etc.? Carb loading on pasta the night before, pretzels, and praying before we race.

What is your go to pre-race music? Upbeat running playlists

If you could do a sport other than XC/Track, what sport would it be, and why? Realistically probably swimming, as it is in many ways similar to running and is a great form of lifelong exercise. Unrealistically, it would be so cool to be a gymnast or ice-skater.
