AAA 5A Boys State Meet Preview

When the gun goes off Saturday morning at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, all eyes will be on Jackson Free of Mountain Home, and for good reason. Free isn't just the defending 5A champion,  he's rewritten the standards of Arkansas distance running this season. With a jaw-dropping personal best of 14:44.03, Free enters the race with the fastest 5A time in the state by more than 30 seconds and has consistently run in elite national territory.

He's undefeated against in-state competition this fall and has clocked four sub-15:00 performances, including a dominant win at the Chile Pepper Festival. His performance ceiling is high enough that, if conditions hold steady in the mid-60s and the course is dry, we could be looking at one of the fastest 5K runs ever seen at Oaklawn.

The battle for second, however, is far from decided - and it's loaded with talent. Free's teammate Garrett Barr (15:14) has enjoyed a breakout senior season, emerging as a legitimate podium contender and giving Mountain Home a rare 1-2 threat. Isaac Ortega of Little Rock Christian Academy, who boasts a best of 15:50, has also been incredibly consistent and is peaking at the right time. Hudson Harper (Lakeside, 15:59) and Dallas Martinez (Lakeside, 16:03) will look to join the chase pack and are more than capable of top-five finishes. Ortega in particular could be Free's closest challenger if the early pace proves hot, as he's raced aggressively in multiple major invitationals this season.

Behind them, a deep group of runners sits just on the cusp of sub-16 status and could shake up the leaderboard. That includes Chance Cunningham of Siloam Springs, who has run 16:07, and Isaac Sabado (LR Christian, 16:09), both of whom bring big-meet experience and strong finishes. Don't count out Cole Chadwick (Valley View), Carson Walker (Russellville), or Grant Moore (Greenbrier) either, each of whom has dipped under 16:20 and has the potential to move up if the race strings out early. With over a dozen runners between 16:00 and 16:30, the battle for all-state honors (top 10) will be intense, and positioning early could make all the difference on Oaklawn's wide-open layout.

2025 Arkansas AAA 5A Boys Team Championship Preview

The team title race in 5A looks like a potential repeat of last year's dominance - but the competition is deeper than ever. Mountain Home High School comes in as the overwhelming favorite, returning not just the top individual in Jackson Free but an entire supporting cast capable of stacking the front. With Garrett Barr (15:14) providing a massive 1-2 punch, the Bombers ran a team average of 16:08 at the West Conference Meet. With a tight 1-5 compression behind their leaders and top-end firepower, it will take a near-perfect day from any challenger to knock them off the top.

Challenging them most closely is last year's runner-up finisher Lakeside High School. Led by Hudson Harper and Dallas Martinez, both ranked inside the top 10 individually, Siloam Springs ran a fairly close race at the West Conference meet to MH with their 17:14 team average. With an average over 17 minutes, they'll need to close the 1:33 spread in Hot Springs. If they can run at their their best, we could see them average under 16:50.

LR Christian Academy is also firmly in the hunt for a trophy, thanks to Isaac Ortega and Isaac Sabado, both of whom can break into the top 10. Russellville is another program with a consistent, veteran squad, led by Carson Walker and Jaxon Smith, and their tight pack could be a factor if some of the top teams falter.

Greenbrier, and Valley View also bring teams with state meet experience and runners in the top 30 mix. If their top scorers can slide into the 11-25 range, a fourth- or fifth-place team finish is certainly possible.

With strong weather conditions expected and the flat, fast layout at Oaklawn Park, the 5A boys team title may come down to execution - and Mountain Home looks locked in. Still, Lakeside and LR Christian are hungry, and if anyone stumbles, the door could open just enough for a late-season upset.
