Mountain Home has won the last two 5A state titles, but with a few crucial runners departing, the division may be up for grabs once again and Valley View could be a team that seizes the opportunity.
11th at the state meet a year ago, Valley View was led by four sophomores and a junior and all nine runners who competed at the state meet last season, return for 2024.
Reece Smith has steadily improved over his first two high school seasons, setting significant personal bests each season. Coming off a 6th-place finish in the 1,600m in the spring, the rising junior is flying under the radar and could compete for an individual title as well this fall.
