AAA 4A Girls State Meet Preview

As the 2025 4A Girls Cross Country State Championship returns to Oaklawn Park on Saturday morning, all eyes turn to a wide-open individual race that promises fierce competition. With perfect racing conditions expected-sunny skies and mild mid-60s temperatures at the 10:30 a.m. the stage is set for a breakout performance in a field full of rising stars and seasoned returners.

Leading the charge is Azul Garcia of Warren High School, who owns the fastest time in 4A this season at 19:03.00, which she ran back in early September. Garcia did not compete at state last year but has shown throughout the fall that she is a legitimate title contender. Hot on her heels will be Riley Farris, the Heber Springs freshman phenom who posted a 19:18.83 at her district meet and has steadily climbed the rankings all year. The battle between Garcia and Farris could come down to the wire, and both have proven capable of sub-20-minute performances.

Returning all-stater Ellie Echols of Arkadelphia brings experience and grit to the field after placing fifth in 2024 and entering this year's meet with a 19:53.27 season best. Close behind is Virginia Brantley of Episcopal Collegiate (19:56.70), who was seventh last fall and has helped lead her team to the top ranking in 4A. Teammate Claire Lammers is also back in form and capable of a top-10 finish after finishing eighth at state last year and clocking a 20:37.45 this season.

Several newcomers are worth keeping an eye on, including Jenny Grano (Waldron), Cate Parker (Pea Ridge), and Blakely Billings (Shiloh Christian), all of whom are among the top 10-ranked runners in 4A this fall. And don't overlook Alice Crum of Pulaski Academy, who placed fourth last year and has maintained strong form this season with a best of 20:30.30.

With over a dozen athletes holding season bests under 21 minutes and several others hovering close, the 4A individual title could come down to who executes best on the challenging Oaklawn course. Will it be Garcia's strength, Farris' rising star power, or a seasoned vet like Echols or Brantley who captures the crown? We'll find out Saturday morning in what should be one of the most thrilling races of the day.

Top 10 Returning Girls From 2024 Championships

2025 Arkansas AAA 4A Girls Cross Country State Championships - Team Preview

The team battle in this year's 4A girls state championship looks to be a heavyweight clash between defending champions Episcopal Collegiate and a surging Heber Springs squad. Episcopal enters with the lowest team average (21:12) and a tight 1-5 split of just 2:11, led by returning state medalists Virginia Brantley and Claire Lammers. Add in consistent contributors like Lili Norman, Lila Smart, and Emma Chiles, and Episcopal has both front-end firepower and depth. If they run to their potential, they could walk away with back-to-back titles.

But Heber Springs isn't far behind and may have the best 1-2 punch in the state with Riley Farris and Lea Monk. Their path to a title will depend heavily on how their pack performs. Sarina Mays, Haven Downs, and Presley Currie will need to run close together and within the top 50 overall for them to have a shot. Their team average of 21:32 is strong, but their wider split of 3:30 means execution is key.

Looking to disrupt the top two is Pottsville, who brings a consistent and experienced group led by Addison Cox, Audri Martin, and Chloe Kilgore. With an average of 22:20 and a tight 1:35 split, Pottsville has podium potential if their top three can push into the front pack.

Shiloh Christian is another podium contender, boasting a strong trio in Billings, Ella Russell, and Hannah Russell. Their concern lies in the depth, with a nearly 5-minute split from 1 to 5. If their back-end runners step up, they could slide into the top three.

Gravette and Waldron both return state-tested lineups and have shown big improvements this season. Gravette's Keira Ralph and Caylee Roughton lead a squad with podium upside, while Waldron's strength comes from a solid front trio, including freshman standout Jenny Grano.

Other teams to watch include Pea Ridge, Pulaski Academy, and DeQueen, all of whom have shown flashes of competitiveness this fall and could climb the leaderboard with season-best days.

When the dust settles at Oaklawn, it's likely that the championship trophy will once again come down to Episcopal Collegiate vs. Heber Springs. But in championship cross country, anything can happen-especially with this many capable teams ready to pounce.
