Conference 2A-4 Cross Country Championships Review

Magazine, Arkansas – The day could not have been more beautiful. Sunshine and 35 degrees at 7:30 a.m. and 68 degrees during senior boys race. The athletes responded well with a number of season and personal bests. Teamwise the day followed close to preview form. Individual competition varied and made for some outstanding finishes. The junior girls battle was intense with fans and coaches screaming to the end and the outcome unsure until results were posted. Kaitlynn Ryan/Magazine, Amy Tan/Hackett, and Hailey Weathers/JC Westside took it out strong on the 1.5 mile junior high course. After the half mile mark, Ryan and Tan pulled away with nearly synchronized running to the final 100 meters where Tan outkicked Ryan for the individual title in a cool 9:07. Littleton of Magazine took 4th to give the lead back to Magazine after each #2 runner was in (Mag-6, Hackett-7, and Westside-8); the battle was as fierce as ever with Mathews of Magazine ahead of Hackett’s and Westside’s #3 but Westside finished 8-9 and Hackett 10-11 so that after each team’s #4 runners were in the score stood at:  Magazine-25, Westside-25, and Hackett-28. Davis, Faught, and Burr of Magazine had featured some pack running and finished 12-13-14 to bring the title home for the Rattlers of Magazine. The junior boys race went just as expected with Mountainburg winning in dominating fashion.  Eureka Springs had the top two runners in Robert Lafever and Matthew McClung. The senior girls race seemed eerily similar to the junior girls race with Magazine holding off Hackett and JC Westside by a narrow margin. Shelby Gordon and freshman Kaitlynn Ryan finished 1-2 with Brooke Stain of Westside coming home in third. Brittney Bryan (11th), Tierra Phillips (15th), Beth Forst (17th), and Heather Bryan (20th) led the Lady Rattlers to their 5th consecutive title. The senior boys race was dominated by Eureka Springs with Nathan Andress and Jake McClung finishing 1-2.
