AAA 3A Boys State Meet Preview

The 2025 3A boys individual title race at Oaklawn Park is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent memory. With sunny skies and mild mid-60s temperatures expected, ideal race conditions will set the stage for a thrilling showdown between some of Arkansas' best young distance runners. All eyes will be on Caleb McFarland of Maumelle Charter, who enters the meet as the top seed after an incredible 15:51.84 earlier this season. McFarland, last year's state runner-up, has dominated his races this fall and will be tough to beat if he brings his A-game.

But pushing him from the gun will be Dathan Haberstroh of Providence Academy, who clocked a near-identical 15:53.42 at the Sugar Creek Showdown. Haberstroh didn't compete at the state meet last year, but his emergence this season has added fire to the rivalry between Maumelle Charter and Providence. Right on their heels is Jacob Sparlin of Dover, who finished third at state in 2024 and enters with a season best of 15:53.70, making this a true three-man battle for the crown.

Also in the mix is Tristen Rodgers of Jessieville (16:10.72), a returning top-10 finisher who has improved considerably this year. He'll be joined by teammates James Dundee, Dylan Wilt, and Sam Pricop, giving Jessieville depth and firepower.

Winston Harp (Providence), Roth Williamson (Maumelle Charter), and Joseph Brooks (Providence) are all returning state top-10 finishers who've consistently raced in the low 17s, making them threats for a podium finish.

Beyond the podium chase, the field features a strong group of runners capable of All-State performances, including Guy Turner (McGehee), Cason Rowton (Genoa Central), Henry DenHerder (West Fork), Sawyer Hartman (Valley Springs), and Eli Wilson (Maumelle Charter). With at least a dozen runners under 18:00 and several more knocking on the door, this year's 3A boys individual race promises a furious pace from the gun and a dramatic finish in the homestretch at Oaklawn.

2025 3A Boys Cross Country State Championship - Team Preview

The battle for the team title in the 2025 3A boys race could be even more intense than the individual one. Providence Academy, runner-up last year by just five points, enters this weekend's state meet as the statistical favorite. Their squad is led by top individual contender Dathan Haberstroh, backed by a dominant top five that includes Winston Harp, Joseph Brooks, Noah Marble, and Miles Pastoor. They boast a 17:18 average team time and a manageable 1-5 split of 2:33 - giving them both firepower and depth that should put them in control.

However, don't count out Jessieville High School, which ranks second based on season bests. Led by Tristen Rodgers and supported by three other runners under 18:15, Jessieville's average of 17:54 and tight spread of 2:39 give them the consistency needed to challenge Providence - especially if their fifth runner has a big day.

Meanwhile, Maumelle Charter, the defending state champions, returns with arguably the strongest front-runner in Caleb McFarland and steady contributors in Roth Williamson, Eli Wilson, and Griffin Meeks. But with a wide 4:15 split, they'll need their back-end pack to move up to have a shot at defending their title.

Dover High School is an intriguing sleeper pick. They have a front-runner in Jacob Sparlin and a solid core, but a 3:47 split and average time of 18:35 could leave them just outside the podium unless they close the gap. Thaden School, ranked fifth, has made big strides this season and carries a 19:51 average with an excellent 1:21 spread, but may be one year away from truly contending.

Other squads with potential to crack the top five include West Fork, Centerpoint, and Genoa Central, though each will need breakthrough performances from their mid-pack runners. Ultimately, this team race may come down to a few key places around the fourth and fifth runners. Providence Academy looks poised to avenge last year's narrow loss, but with Jessieville and Maumelle Charter lurking close, fans can expect a tight and dramatic finish in this championship clash.
