Frick Files: Nine Notes from Early Season Racing

Keep Your Eyes on Bentonville West

Distance running in Northwest Arkansas is competitive and it's only going to get more competitive over the next few years.

Bentonville West finished 4th in the 6A girls race at state last season, putting their top 5 between 24th and 38th in scoring. And while the Wolverines lost their top finisher from state, they have replaced her with Elizabeth Decker, who has been one of the state's best this season and will be competing for a podium finish as an individual in three weeks.

Currently ranked 4th in 6A, Bentonville West is averaging 19:47 over 5K this season with two seniors, a sophomore, and two freshmen in their scoring five. It's safe to say this won't be the team's last season up front.

The boys team is also rising through the state rankings quickly. After finishing 7th at the state meet last season, the team graduated a good portion of the team from that day. However, they've been incredible this season, averaging 16:33.0 through 5K with a 1-5 split of just 15 seconds and are ranked 4th in the state.

Behind their scoring five, the Wolverines have two more sub 17 runners which makes for an intimidating top 7. And best of all, 6 of their top 7 will be back next season. It's a crowded field up front this season, but the Wolverines are going to be a threat to be reckoned with for years to come.
